History

Wielerclub Sport & Steun was founded in 1977. The residents of Zemst-Bos (a hamlet to the city of Zemst) have lost their hearts to cyclism for decades. All this thanks to the success of our fellow villager, among others, Jan Lauwers who was a professional. In 1963 Jan won even 2 stages in the "Tour of Spain" as an assistant to Rik Van Looy, otherwise known as the emperor of Herentals. In 1967 he was once more on the winner's stage in the "Vuelta".

In 1977 a young sports freak in Zemst-Bos, Patrick De Donder, decided to follow Jan's footsteps. Jan was also know as "Zjang Koereur". To support our young local rider Patrick, a few cyclism fanatics founded "Wielerclub Sport & Steun". Every year since then, a few races are being organised.

A number of young riders competed for the honoured places on our streets. Most of the time, we even had a lot of future professionals at our finish, which is a pleasant finding. Amongst those professionals we had Roger Ilegems (Olympic champion points race in Los Angeles 1984) and Tom Steels. Even Ronny Van Holen, Corneille Daems, Patrick Verschueren, Rudy and Marc Patry, Sébastien Demarbaix, Thomas Dekker, Arnaud De Lie and a lot of others are names which sound familiar.

Future

At this moment it is still our objective to support the youth cycling sport. Each year we still organise 2 races: 1 in July for juniors and our important interclub competition race for teams juniors in September. With these organizations we want to give our young riders a chance to measure up to a sportive way in the best and most safe conditions without to forget our spectators...
